Anarchy/Art
May day chaos! We love some anarchy, but not while we have to work! As we prepared an art tour in the district of Kreuzberg on May 1st, the may day festivities started to turn into riots.
Having to leave our bikes behind, we fought our way through to Cruise & Callas, a gallery in a former motorcycle garage, run by Simone Lüling and Kirstin Strunz. They were opening the show of Sibylla Dumke and Katja Strunz. The ladder, being well known, surprised us with a clanking and rumbling installation in the spooky but intriguing basement room, while the former had her first solo exhibition upstairs - purposely imperfect geometrical forms in neon and earthly colours, inspired by african rugs:

What we like about this place is that each artist makes an affordable edition accompanying their show. This time it’s a mobile! We hadn’t seen those in ages and Dumke’s are really nice.
The vernissage crowd was an enjoyable mixture of everything and certainly in a better mood than the rioting one in the surroundings. We spent a delightful hour there talking to the friendly gallerists and gathered enough strength to fight our way through to other art spaces, but more about that another time.

The Sibylla Dumke/Katja Strunz show will be on display until June 6th, 2009 in Köpenicker Str. 187/188 at Cruise&Callas.
